Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

从最初的第五题沿革而来，先是删去了diversity，这一次又把identity作为并列的一项（原先的文字是a background or story that is so central to their identity），在字面上弱化了对所谓「弱势族群」(URM, under-represented minority)的偏向，但仍然可以把这道题看成是给美国本土非裔墨裔学生预留的。对于一般中国学生而言，如果有特殊的家庭背景或在自己预申请的大学专业上有特别才能（这方面需要在活动和奖项上能够印证），推荐写这个。但是连题目里都是说some students，所以并不是每个人都适合。
这道题目是历年通用表格里出现频率最高的题目，我们也称之为「万能」的题目。它之所以万能，是因为它几乎无所不包，从学生的成长背景，到兴趣爱好，都可以写到这个题目里面。但是它也绝非简单，就是因为学生必须很好地认识到自己究竟是怎样的一个人。在我们老师看来，这道题的题眼在于identity，也就是学生对自己的认知程度有多深。只有真正了解自己的人，才会清楚地知道，成长背景对塑造了今天的自己有多深刻的影响，而兴趣爱好又从什么程度上折射出了自己的人格。

翻译：...失败是成功之母。回忆你曾经经历过的一次变故或失败。它对你有什么影响，你学到了什么教训？
成功的留学文书永远是正面的，所以说到「困难」，就应该转到「教训」甚至是「克服」上面。当然，巧妙的构思是能为这种标准的思路增色不少的。今年题目里新增的一句说明「失败是成功之母」也印证了这一点。
从2013年开始，通用表格就加入了与失败这个话题有关的文书。这道题目可以说是中国学生比较难以应付的一道，因为申请美国本科的学生往往来自于富足的中产阶级家庭，自小很少经历磨难或挫折，对失败这两个字的了解，往往停留在考试没有考好，或者跟小伙伴吵架闹翻之类的事情上。如果要在个人陈述中写这样的事情，难免会给招生官留下思考问题不够深入，人生经历不够丰富的印象，所谓少年不识愁滋味，为赋新词强说愁。不过值得注意的是，在我们的老师辅导学生的过程中，经常遇到对这道题非常有兴趣的学生。他们认为自己的成长总是没有达到心目中的要求，所以非常能够体会失败的心情。然而因为对自己要求过高，从而觉得人生非常失败的题材，对于招生官来说并没有太好的效果，因为这样会使得文书的基调显得灰暗消极，难以给人以振奋的力量，自然也无法从众多申请者中脱颖而出。所以避免消极的基调，强调从失败中站起来的过程，才是这个题目的重点。如果要选择这道题目，就要突出吸取教训，重振旗鼓的故事，而不是沉溺于失败之中。

翻译：...回忆你曾质疑过的一种信念或想法。是什么促使你这么做的？你还会做同样的决定么？
考察批判性思维(critical thinking)和个性，题目没有改。对于此题，以后是否做同样的决定都可以。答「是」的话要强调独立思考，答「否」的话要强调成长。这道题而言中国学生不具有太大优势，因此在没有特别好的思路时，不用生搬硬套，即便写的话也要注意避免过于偏激。
第三题关注的是学生挑战固有观念和权威的精神，体现出了美国大学对批判性思维的关注。与第二道题类似的是，这道题也可以说是中国学生的软肋，因为中国式教育强调的是服从和听话，鲜有挑战的机会。然而如果能够从中式教育的森严环境中，看到可以挑战的理念，并且奋勇地站出来付诸行动，那么就更为难得可贵。然而并不是说只要能够推翻前人的理念就是好事情，重点还是在于，你要取代旧理念的新理念是什么。这个新的理念是否更加合理，更加宽容，更加符合社会发展的趋势？如果你没有一个明晰的新理念，而只是因为不愿意服从权威而加以反抗，这篇文书就会显得内核不足，缺乏坚实的骨架。

最初Common申请系统是有一道1000字符的让描写自己一个课外活动或工作经历的题目的。当时不少学生没有很好的把握这一点，会让长短两篇文书重叠起来，白白浪费机会。从适用范围来说，本题延续了这种思路，在上一个版本中是唯一一道人人可写的万能题，因此撞车的可能性比较高。不过在这一个版本中新增的第四题可以勉强帮忙分摊一些压力。注意到限定是在marked your transition from childhood to adulthood，因此需要尽力找一件鲜明的标志性事件。不论大小，只要写出这件事对自己成长的特殊意义，就是成功的。
关于成长，始终是美国大学关注的重点。招生官不一定希望看到一个老气横秋的高三学生，但是他们十分希望看到一个充满成长的潜力，能够在人生过程中不断提升自己的视野、增强自己的思考能力和独立承担肩头责任的学生。所以这道题的关键词毫无疑问就是transition，从一个孩子变成一个大人的过程。然而成长这个过程又是复杂的，每个人的成长轨迹也各不相同。所以申请者有必要定义自己究竟怎样才算成长。在我们老师辅导学生的过程中，遇到过将成长定义为能够关怀他人的学生，也遇到过将成长定义为能够独立掌控自己人生的学生。这些定义都很好，只要能够符合他们的人生轨迹，就可以折射出他们的人格，给招生官留下不错的印象。
